Solar Light Batteries & Parts Buying Guide

Most solar lights that stop working need a new battery, not a new light. The rechargeable cell is usually the first part to wear out.

  • Match the battery type. Check the old cell: NiMH, NiCd or lithium (often 3.2 V LiFePO4 in an AA size). Replace like with like. A 3.2 V lithium cell can damage a light designed for 1.2 V NiMH.
  • Capacity (mAh). A higher mAh NiMH cell can run longer, but only if the panel can fill it on a typical day.
  • Do not use alkaline batteries. They are not rechargeable and can leak.
  • Clean the panel. Dirt and clouded plastic cut charging. Wipe panels regularly; a hazy panel can sometimes be improved with plastic polish.
  • Check the sensor. Lights that stay off in the dark may have a covered or faulty light sensor, or the switch may be off.

Solar bulbs with their own panel are a separate product: a hanging bulb you can use in sheds, tents or chicken coops. Recycle old rechargeable batteries at a battery drop-off point.
