Solar Lanterns & Lamps Buying Guide

Solar lanterns range from soft decorative pieces to practical camping lights. Start by deciding whether you want ambience or usable light.

  • Decorative lanterns (hanging, table, mason jar and flame-effect) give a warm glow. Flickering flame models look convincing but are not bright enough to read by.
  • Camping and emergency lanterns should list lumens and runtime per mode. Many also charge by USB, which helps on cloudy days.
  • Build. Metal frames with glass or thick acrylic panels last longer than thin plastic. Check the hanging hook or handle is sturdy.
  • Weather resistance. Look for an IP44 or higher rating for lanterns left outside.
  • Charging. A top-mounted panel needs open sky; hanging lanterns under a covered porch may need a model with a separate panel.
