Solar Christmas lights avoid extension cords and outdoor outlets, but they depend on daylight at the darkest time of year. Plan for shorter runtimes on cloudy December days than the box suggests.
- Panel placement. Choose sets with a separate panel on a long lead so you can put the panel in the sunniest spot, away from the shade of eaves and evergreens.
- Battery. Most sets use a rechargeable NiMH or lithium cell. A replaceable battery extends the life of the set.
- Weather rating. Look for an IP65 rating or similar for the panel and controller.
- Modes and timer. Steady and slow-fade modes use less power than fast flashing; an on/off switch lets you store the set charged.
- Colour. Warm white suits traditional displays; multicolour reads better from a distance.
Give new lights a full day of sun with the switch off before first use. For year-round options, see solar string and fairy lights and pathway lights.
